Literary Ladies: A Night with Tamera Alexander

For our May book for Literary Ladies, we chose Tamera Alexander's A Beauty So Rare.
We have read her books before and loved them, so this really was a no brainer.
Then when we heard that our county's Arts Council was having her come to town to speak,
we really knew we had to read this latest book!

We had our meeting at FHU's Brown Kopel Business building.
We had a table set up to buy her books, to join the Arts Council, to have photographs
taken with her and then a place where she would sign books later.

We, then, went into Ayers Auditorium where my friend, Sherry, introduced Tamera, who
had been in college with Sherry.
Tamera walked us through her books and how she became a writer.

After her talk, we invited everyone back to the lobby for light refreshments as well as a chance to
meet with Tamera.

Menu:

Eleanor Braddock's Pink Dress Punch

1 container of raspberry sherbet
2 liter of Ginger Ale

Mix together

Buckingham Palace Tea Cookies

1 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 c. sugar
1/4 c. confectioner's sugar
1 T. tea (we used Buckingham Palace Garden Party Tea)
1/4 t. salt
1/2 t. vanilla
1 t. water
1/2 c. unsalted butter

Preheat the oven to 375.  Pulse together all the dry ingredients in a food processor
until the tea leaves are pulverized.
Add vanilla, water and butter.  Pulse together until a dough is formed.  Form the dough into
a log onto a piece of wax or parchment paper.  Wrap the paper around and roll the log smooth.
Freeze now or chill for at least 30 minutes.
When chilled, slice the log into thin slices.  You will need a sharp knife for this to cut smoothly without smushing the dough.  Place on baking sheets and bake until the edges are just brown, about 12 minutes.  Let cool on sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.  Makes 2 dozen.

Millionaire's Shortcake

Crust:   2 c. all-purpose flour
2 sticks unsalted butter, cut into 1/2 in. cubes
1/2 c. dark brown sugar, packed
 2 T. ice water
4 t. Cornstarch
1/2 t. salt
2 large egg yolks

Preheat the oven to 350.  Line a 9x13 pan with aluminum foil, pushing the foil neatly on the corners
and up the sides of the pan.  Spray the foiled pan with nonstick cooking spray.  In the bowl of a food processor fitted with a metal blade, combine the flour, brown sugar, cornstarch and salt; process until well combined and no lumps of brown sugar remain.  Add the butter and pulse until a coarse meal forms.  Add the ice water and egg yolks and blend until moist clumps forms.  Dump the dough onto the prepared pan and press with your fingers into an even layer (dust your fingers with flour if the dough is too sticky). Pierce the dough all over with a fork and blade until golden, about 20 minutes.  Set aside to cool.

Caramel Layer: 2 cans sweetened condensed milk
4 T. dark corn syrup
1 c. dark brown sugar, packed
2 t. vanilla extract
1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter
generous pinch of salt

Whisk the sweetened condensed milk, dark brown sugar, dark corn syrup, butter, vanilla and salt together in a medium saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, the butter melts and the mixture comes to a boil.  Attach a candy thermometer to the side of the pan and boil gently, whisking constantly, until the caramel is thick and the temperature registers 225 degrees F, about 6 minutes.  Pour the caramel over the warm crust; spread to edges.  Cool for about 15 minutes or until caramel is set.

Chocolate Layer: 12 oz. semi sweet chocolate chips
6 T. heavy cream
Sea Salt

Place the chocolate chips and cream in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20 second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth.  Spread the chocolate over the caramel layer.  Sprinkle sea salt over the chocolate.  Refrigerate the bars until the chocolate is set, at least 1 hour.  Using the foil overhang, lift the bars out of the pan and transfer to a cutting board.  Cut into small squares and store in refrigerator until ready to serve.
Note: The shortbread layer will crumble a bit when you cut it; that's just the nature of it.  Makes 144 small bites.

Cheese Cubes and Crackers

Tamera was so generous with her time and talents.
She treated each person like an individual and made each visit so personal.
We appreciate all she did to make the night a success!

For our next book club, we are each choosing a classic book to read.
We will have a book swap at the next meeting!
What classic book have you never read but want to
or
what is your favorite classic to reread?

Literary Ladies: It Happened At the Fair

In March, our Literary Ladies at church had our meeting to discuss our latest book we had read
It Happened at the Fair by Deeanna Gist.
I absolutely LOVED this book.
It takes place at the Chicago's World Fair in 1893.
This book has everything in it -
history...
love...
chocolate...
firefighters...
beauty...
mystery...
We had a wonderful time reading it and fabulous time talking about the book.

Tables were set and decorated to recognize the different buildings the World's Fair had to offer.
Of course, we couldn't go without a table to represent the firefighters!

A Ferris Wheel graced the food table since it made its debut at the
Chicago's World Fair.

World's Fair Menu:

Chicago Style Hot Dogs
Cupcakes
Popcorn
Peanuts
Hot Chocolate
Cracker Jacks
Doughnuts

It was a fabulous night at the fair!
Our next book to read is Tamara Alexander's
A Beauty So Rare.

She will be making a guest appearance at the meeting as well!

Literary Ladies: One Thousand Gifts

For our March meeting of Literary Ladies at church, we read the book One Thousand Gifts.
It was a different book compared to the others we have read up to this point, but what a great one it was.  It was a wonderful choice as we began a new year because the whole point of the book was to look every day at the gifts God has given you that day - big and small.

The decorations were chosen to represent small gifts that you might see in nature every day.  Since the cover of the book was a nest with eggs (a gift showing growth and starting new), nests and birds were the main decorations of the night.

As the women arrived, they were allowed and encouraged to go to a creation table.  There we had everything they needed to make their own gratitude journal - something that was mentioned in the book as a way to record your gifts from God each day.  The ladies did such a great job being creative and showing their different personalities with the books they made.  Here are a few examples of the ones that were made.

For our meal, each lady brought something they were thankful for.  We had such a wonderful array of different foods and the reasons they were thankful for those items.

While we had lost one of our members the previous night from a fight with cancer, it was a great time to talk about how thankful we were for her and her effect on each of our lives.  The flowers that adorned the tables were collected and placed in a larger vase.  Then they were given to the family along with cards telling why each of us was thankful for Hope.

It was a wonderful night.  The next book, The Wedding Dress, was introduced for us to read for our meeting in May.  Great plans are already in the works for another great meeting.

Literary Ladies: The First Gardener

Our Literary Ladies book club at church met in January to discuss the book
We enjoyed this book for many reasons.  One being that it took place in our home state of
Tennessee at the governor's mansion.
So many topics are covered in this book and there are some surprises along the way.
Lessons on forgiveness, love and family are carried throughout the whole book.

We decorated the tables with different flowers mentioned in the book.

The tables were set with blue plates and a packet of seeds was at each place as a reminder of the book.

I led a devotional about planting your spiritual garden in your life for others to see.

For our food, we each brought our favorite Tennessee food.  We never lack for food at these meetings and that continued tonight.

From fried chicken to fresh vegetables . . .

to grits . . . to white beans and cornbread . . .

to Coca Cola Cake to Chess Pies . . .

We are so excited about our new book 1,000 Gifts that we are reading for next time.  This is a major change for the group, but we are excited about the change!

Literary Ladies: The Master's Wall

Our ladies' book club at church just read The Master's Wall.  It was a very different book than we have read in the past but most everyone enjoyed it and is looking forward to reading the rest of the series as they come out.  Dana and Kristen did a WONDERFUL job planning the menu, decorations and devotional for us.  We decided that we needed to go back in time to Italy to get the full effect of the evening . . .

The Master's Wall Menu:

Homemade Pasta
Pesto sauce
Meat sauce
Vegetarian sauce
Fettucini Shrimp Alfredo
Spinach Strawberry Salad
Garlic bread sticks
Fruit
Italian Angel Cookies
Cheesecake
various desserts

Dana instructed everyone on how to make their own pasta - very economical!!!

It was a wonderful night with great food, great fellowship and a great book!  We are going to meet in January the next time and we are going to come home with our book selection.  We will be reading The First Gardener which takes place at the Tennessee Governor's mansion in Nashville.  I am so excited!

Literary Ladies: The Wednesday Letters

do I get so far behind?  I had thought about just skipping to the present day, but so much has happened that I want to remember.  Therefore, I am going to try to catch up!

Our book club at church read The Wednesday Letters over the summer.  It was one that had been recommended to us and it was a great read! I loved it and can't wait to read the sequel to it The Wedding Letters.  For the decorations, we went with a bed and breakfast theme since the book takes place at a bed and breakfast.  One of our newest members, Dana, had a dream (Yes, a dream) about the decorations and we let her go with it! She did a great job!

For our meal, we asked the ladies to bring their favorite breakfast foods and oh, how we dined!!! We have never lacked for food at our meetings and I believe the food just gets better and better.  We had everything from grits to fruit to breakfast casseroles to breakfast tacos to muffins to quiches.  It was wonderful!

Adana did a great job leading us in our devotional thought about what we are leaving for our families as traditions and legacies.  Rosemary led us in our discussion about the book.  The ladies love book club so much, so we are moving to every two months!!! I am so thrilled that the ladies are loving this like they do and are so excited about it.  We are growing each time with new members. It is just great to see the love for books and our God shine through.

The next book we are reading is The Master's Wall.
