Welcome BATW Visitors!!!

I know you are all a little jet lagged from the trip to Japan, so, while you are resting your eyes for a bit, I will tell some of my daily readers what is going on today. I have been a part of Debbie's Blog Around the World (BATW) since the beginning. My friend, Melissa, introduced me to it and I have loved it!! I have met so many new friends and am glad I can share a bit of myself today. For those of you who are not part of BATW, I would highly recommend it!!! Anyways . . . .

This is actually Denver's airport. I could not find a picture of Memphis' airport. However, I am sure this was a stop for some of you as you came in from Japan!

I hope you all landed safely in Memphis. Nashville's airport is usually cheaper, but it is 2 1/2 hours away instead of just 1 hour and 15 minutes. Plus, while you are in Memphis you can visit . . . .the Peabody Hotel - if you time it just right you can see these ducks waddle their way to the fountain for a little swim.

Graceland, Elvis' home,

and St. Jude's Children's Hospital. This place has a special place in our hearts. We have 3 children in our community who are currently being treated at St Jude's. One young lady is Miss Priss's teacher's aide's daughter (did you catch that?). She is now in remission and will graduate from high school in May. She is planning on running in the St. Jude's Hero marathon in December.

You can even check out a Broadway play at the Orpheum or

hear some jazz music on Beale Street.

From Memphis, you will head west on 64 until you hit Hwy. 100 and this will bring you straight into our little small town. If you love the outdoors or need to stretch your legs, I suggest you go to Chickasaw State Park. We love going there for a hike around the lake, riding horses or just playing around outside.

Our little town is right beside Chickasaw and, boy, are we booming!! My family has lived here for 6 years now and we have gone from one red light to three!!! Plus, they have just finished a by-pass around our little town so big truckers don't take out the red lights like they did one time. Stop by the house for a BBQ dinner unique to Chester County. You just missed the BBQ festival, but there is always BBQ to sell.

You can always hit our 1950's Bell's Drive-in Diner for "The Best Hamburger This Side of Heaven." They have been voted "Best Hamburger" in Tennessee!! However, you will need to bring cash with you - you really do step back in time, as they will take cash and checks (?)!!! Arrive between 11:00-11:30 for lunch or 4:3o for supper. This hometown diner is always full!!

Take a drive down Main Street and you will run into one of things we are famous for:

Our favorite thing about our small town is Freed-Hardeman University. This is where I met DH and where we came back to raise a family. DH works here and who knows if we will ever leave. The pay is not much but the rewards are too numerous to count!! Come the first week in February to hear lectures on the Bible from people all over the world or come the first weekend in April to see a student production called, Makin' Music, like none other. Whenever you want, come on down. FHU is always "teaching how to live and how to make a living."

The Bell Tower of FHU

We are also famous for being the home of Eddie Arnold . . . . . .

and the original Walking Tall movie was filmed in our little town. One of my college professors was in the movie - she is always willing to tell you about it!!!
People thought we were crazy moving from Nashville to Henderson. "You will be so bored!" they said. Bored we are not - blessed we are. I hope you have enjoyed a little preview of West Tennessee (I will leave Middle and East TN for someone else to talk about). Feel free to look around my blog - it is mainly about my family and my faith. I am a stay at home mom who loves to scrapbook, make cards, play with my kids, read and teach Bible class (check out my Bible class teacher idea blog here.). I can't wait to meet ya'll and hope ya'll will come back to visit me soon! I will have BBQ and sweet tea waiting for ya!

Becky...this was perfect! I love that you went from one stoplight to three...that made me laugh out loud because there are three stoplights between me and the grocery store 2 miles away! Great job and thanks so much for your willingness to be our hostess!

What a lovely town. White House continues to grow and it is losing the small town feel. I like the conveniences but it is a little sad too. Thanks for sharing.

Coming to you from BATW. First time here and I loved your tour. Nothing better than a small town. You made it sound so cozy and welcoming. I am thankful for this stop today. Hope to see you around as we travel together. Not sure how we've missed eachother this long.

Hi fellow TN gal! Just wanted to come over here to the other spotlight for the day and say hi :)

Great tour! Isn't BATW great?

Great tour! I recently called my father on his cell phone (who lives in Cali) and he said he was in Memphis because "he was hungry for ribs." (Don't get me started. Retirement must be nice.) I should show him this tour for his next visit!

Hello from the Gulf Coast of Mississippi!! I got to visit Memphis for the first time last year when my daughter was there for Nationals (gymnastics). It is such a nice city. I really enjoyed not having to drive while in the city... we took the trolley cars because we were staying right at the convention center area. We got pictures of the team playing in the fountains and toured the firehouse museum (fireman museum?)So much interesting history there. :)

Much aloha from Hawaii!!!

We drove through Memphis when we moved from CA to VA. TN was so green! It was nice to "visit" and see some sights we didn't see last time!

BBQ and sweet tea? Be right there (with that stop in Denver being pretty likely since I'm coming from Seattle :)). Thanks so much for the tour!

Didja mention that the Presidential Debate is in Nashville tonite and that Belmont University, where it's being held, is home to the awesome men's NCAA basketball team that almost beat Duke last year during March Madness? I LOVE Tennessee...you've got such a pretty state! Thanks so much for the tour-aren't Debbie and BATW wonderful?

vMmmm BBQ. REAL BBQ! Not the "it will pass because this is new England and they have no idea what it really is" BBQ we get up here.

Hi from MA!

Thanks for the tour!

Small towns are great, aren't they? As long as you can still visit the "big city" occasionally. Thanks for the tour!

Visiting via BATW! LOve TN! I have been there and would love to go back. Graceland was so awesome and very interesting, and the mountains were gorgeous! :D

I went to Memphis for the first time this year and went to all those places you had pictures of. I was so excited. It brought back a lot of good memories of my girls weekend. St. Jude's Hospital is amazing. We had the sweetest tour guide there. He was a true Southern Gentleman. I love Tennessee. Glad to see your little guy is a Braves Fan.
Saying hello from Texas, via BATW.
Enjoy your day.

Hi there -- My dad was one of the founders of St. Jude hospital and I had the honor to grow up watching that place grow and in my 30's served on the board for about 7 years. I've raised funds for it all my life. It's been an honor.

And I LOVE seeing the Peabody's ducks!!!!! I was just staying there in June! Loved your post, which helped me to know much more about the city I've been to so many times but was working too hard to see much of.

i think that my favorite part about your town is all the little things that make it a "small town" esp the diner---now that is awesome! and i espcially liked your picture of the denver airport---ah home!

EmmaP said...

i love small town living. but I have decided it is easier when the small town (or at least the next town) has 1 or 2 good restaurants, and a Wal-Mart. hehehe. BTW, my sis & her hubby own a pulled pork catering company. The customer's fav BBQ sauce seems to be the Memphis Sauce. MMMMM!

Great blog and wonderful tour. I lived in Georgia for four years. Actually got to where I liked it down there. Sometimes, even now I miss the humidity. Especially in the winter when it is 45 degrees and raining.
I grew up in a very small town. Just a dot on the map and if you blinked you missed the one crossroad. We live in a small town now. Could not handle big city life at this jucture in my life
Thanks for the tour.

I love small towns that are near large cities. It's the best of both worlds. I don't do Elvis, but I do love bbq so I'll take you up on that!

A wonderful tour....

I'm a small town girl at heart, as that's what I grew up in.

I'm hoping that's what we will be moving back to, when we finally head back to NZ.

Hey there--you're a GREAT tour guide! I've always liked visiting Tennessee, and was happy when I looked at our itinerary and found out we were Tennessee-bound today. Japan yesterday; Tennessee today, with no jet lag, either. Isn't BATW great?

My husband and I went to Nashville and Memphis for the first time recenlty and LOVED every minute of it. My hubby keeps saying he thinks he is meant to live in Nashville. I think he belives that he was supposed to be a country superstar (did I mention he was born and bred in Chicago??) Yeah, that's not happening! :)

I love small towns. Although I have a feeling that I'd never fit in... regardless of how long I live there, I'll still be the new girl!

I've heard about the ducks at the Peabody. I think that's so neat. Definitely something I'd love to see someday. And mmmmm the best hamburger in Tennessee? I could really go for one of those. Yum!

Someday I would love to visit Freed-Hardeman for the lectures. Friends at the GA never miss it!
